Singapore, Fri: The Sarawak-Singapore Interconnection Project secured a Conditional Approval (CA) from the Energy Market Authority of Singapore (EMA) today (17 Oct), a precursor to the next phase of development of the multi-billion ringgit cross border supply of green power from Sarawak to Singapore.
With the issuance of the CA, the Sarawak-Singapore Interconnection Project is recognised to have been preliminary assessed to be technically and commercially viable and ready to move on to the next phase of obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals and licenses for further development of the project, project implementer Sarawak Energy Bhd. (SEB) said in a press release, today.
The Premier, Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg was on hand to witness the handing-over of the CA certificate during a brief ceremony held at the Singapore Treasury Building, here.
SEB described the CA as a significant milestone towards improving broader energy security prospects and enhancing economic integration between neighbouring nations in the spirit of ASEAN.
The CA is granted to a consortium comprising Sarawak Energy and Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd is to export around 1GW of renewable energy from Sarawak to Singapore, with flow expected to commence around mid-2030s or earlier.
In the handing over ceremony, Mr Eugene Toh, EMA Assistant Chief Executive & Chief Commercial Officer, presented the Letter of Conditional Approval to Datuk Haji Ibrahim Haji Baki, the Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy and PETROS) Sarawak who is also the Chairman of Sarawak Energy and Mr Wong Kim Yin, Group President and Chief Executive Officer of Sembcorp Industries Ltd.
Also on hand to witness the handing-over was Mr Gan Kim Yong, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry.
Also present were Dato Sri Haji Julaihi Narawi, Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak; Mr Alvin Lim, Singapore Interconnection Project Lead, Sarawak Energy and Hajah Siti Aisah Adenan, Senior Vice President, Corporate Services,Sarawak Energy.
Commenting on the CA issuance by EMA, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari said: “Sarawak is pleased with this positive development on the Sarawak-Singapore Project. The project offers significant value in supporting Malaysia’s pursuit of the development and operation of a wider ASEAN Power Grid.
Sarawak is also supporting the development of the Borneo Grid, having established a cross-border connection with West Kalimantan, Indonesia in 2016. Building on this success, we are now working to establish new interconnections with Sabah and Brunei Darussalam to cater to regional energy needs.
Meanwhile, Datuk Haji Ibrahim said: “Multiple interconnections with abundant renewable energy resources, presents an excellent opportunity to initiate multilateral energy trading. Sarawak Energy is committed to respectfully collaborate and work with partners across Borneo and the broader ASEAN community to pursue and advocate the development of interconnections with the common objectives of achieving energy security, shared prosperity and delivering energy transition targets.
The Premier arrived here on Tuesday to deliver a keynote address at the annual Sarawak Civil Service One Team Retreat (SCS OTR) on Wednesday and a similar address at the Sarawak Mega Fair organised by Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office Singapore (STATOS) yesterday to promote Sarawak products and services to Singapore’s business and consumer communities.
Later in the day yesterday, as part of his three-day working visit to the island republic, the Premier met with top officials of UBS Singapore and International fund managers in Singapore.
The meetings, to take advantage of Singapore as a major financial centre in Asia were arranged by AFFIN Bank, of which Sarawak is a majority shareholder to promote investment in various sectors of Sarawak’s robust economy, in renewables in particular.
